Surfing on San Diego Beach

Strand von San Diego

We were looking forward to today all vacation: a beach day and surfing in San Diego! The breakfast was once again very American but OK. At least there was fresh fruit and yoghurt.

Crystal Pier San Diego

We drove up Grand Avenue to the beach by car. There we parked in a side street and walked to the Crystal Pier. This is not only a jetty over the water, but also a hotel with small bungalows. Here you can sleep directly above the Pacific. A really cool idea. The waves didn't look very high yet and the weather also made a rather gloomy impression. But before the surf shop opened it was also a few minutes, it can still be.

Surfing on San Diego Beach

We walked a bit along the beach and then went to the car to go to the Cheap-Rentals-SURFBOARD RENTALS AND EQUIPMENT SERVICES come. After a long search and several times reading and understanding the street sign, we parked somewhere on the side of the road. In the shop we were greeted very friendly and served great. Christian took a soft surfboard and a wetsuit, he has already had a few surf lessons. I didn't trust myself so much and took a soft bottom bodyboard and a wetsuit. To be on the safe side because of the size, I was even able to quickly try on the suit on site in the staff toilet. I found it very nice and a great service!!

We grabbed our gear and walked a block further towards the beach. The weather had become super sunny and the waves were really nice. Off into the wetsuits and boards into the surf, the water was even pleasantly warm. After about an hour, the beach suddenly became more crowded and more and more surfers came into the water. We suddenly had a lot of people around us, some of whom unfortunately threw themselves into the waves quite ruthlessly. It was only after a while that we realized that it was a surf school and that there were many beginners involved. So most of them didn't even know that they were heading straight for us with their boards. Fortunately, the students only had a limited amount of time and then had to get out of the water again. More peace and quiet for us.

Christian often waited quite a while for the perfect wave and he stood most of the time! I was thrilled how well he does it. I had it easier with my bodyboard and could take almost every wave with me. What a great feeling when you have made it back to the beach before! Twice I tried it myself on the surfboard. But Christian had to push me into the wave, I just couldn't paddle in on my own in terms of strength. I brought my first attempt to a standstill! Wow, how awesome. I fell into the water overjoyed and was promptly hit by the board. Christian scolded me because he had explained to me beforehand how I had to fall properly and I hadn't paid attention to it. But all was well, I hadn't hurt myself, that was the main thing.

In the afternoon, the waves became lower and weaker. While they carried us to the beach in the morning, we now fall off the board halfway through. The culprit here is the low tide. The water receded quite a bit and thus the power was missing. We made the best of it and just went into the water again, without wetsuits and boards.

We would recommend everyone to take suits, because the swimming trunks and bikini will never, ever stay in the right place when surfing. What we didn't pay attention to was the sun. It really banged quite a bit and so at the end of the day we had red-brown hands, feet, necks and faces. We should have put on sunscreen better. The rest was all white, due to the wetsuit. Somehow we looked funny. :)

In the late afternoon we brought the boards and wetsuits back, which worked quickly and easily. Off to the hotel and first rinse off the salt water. Afterwards you felt much fresher, but also really exhausted. Surfing is really exhausting! In the evening we had dinner at Panda Express.

Christin
