In May 2022, I visited the Bulgarian capital Sofia for a weekend trip. I chose the Hilton Sofia as my hotel and was excited to see what awaited me as a status guest at this five-star hotel. In this review, I will focus in particular on the hotel's rooms and breakfast.
Booking, arrival and check-in
I booked the hotel through the Hilton website for around EUR 100/night. Only if I book this way do I get the status benefits and bonus points for the nights. In addition, the price is usually not cheaper via the various other booking portals.
Where is the Hilton Sofia located?
The Hilton Sofia enjoys a superb location in the heart of Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria. It is located right on the famous "Boulevard Bulgaria", one of the city's main thoroughfares. Sofia International Airport can be reached in 15 minutes by taxi. At the same time, the hotel offers easy access to the main tourist attractions, such as the National Palace of Culture and the historical center of Sofia, as well as to shopping centers and business districts. Overall, the Hilton Sofia's location is ideal for both business and leisure travelers looking to explore the city of Sofia.
What are the rooms like (King Executive Room) at the Hilton Sofia?
The King Executive Rooms at the Hilton Sofia are spacious and comfortable rooms that offer a higher level of comfort and amenities. The rooms have a king-size bed with premium linens, a glass desk, an armchair, a small flat-screen TV, a minibar, a safe and tea and coffee making facilities. You could tell the facility was showing its age. However, the hotel was undergoing renovations during my stay and the rooms should be updated soon. The bathrooms come with a shower and a bath, a hairdryer and free toiletries. Despite the age everything was very clean and well maintained.
As a guest in an executive room or as a Diamond status guest, I would have had access to the hotel's Executive Lounge. There would have been free breakfast, refreshments and snacks. Unfortunately, this lounge was also closed during my stay or was undergoing renovations. As compensation I was allowed to take some things from the minibar. I found it exciting that not only edible items were to be found in the minibar.
What is the breakfast like at the Hilton Sofia?
Breakfast is served in the attached restaurant on the second floor of the hotel. The room is large and offers enough space. However, the sound of the conversations at the neighboring tables is not swallowed, so that it was quite loud even with the few guests during my stay. The staff was very quick, friendly and accommodating. I was asked several times if everything was ok or if I would like another cappuccino.
The range of food was quantitatively very good. There were the typical warm breakfast dishes, such as scrambled eggs, beans, bacon, salads, various baked goods and desserts. I really liked the Bulgarian specialties such as banitsa, a filo pastry with a filling of brine cheese or quark. So I got something from the traditional kitchen during my short stay. However, the quality was sometimes very poor.

Summary
The location of the Hilton Sofia is ideal for both tourists and business travelers in the Bulgarian capital. The size of the rooms is acceptable and if you get a room that has already been renovated, the stay is also quite comfortable. The breakfast selection was very varied but the quality was not what I would expect from a five star hotel.
