Panorama Langkawi: Cable Car and Sky Bridge

Sky Bridge

Panorama Langkawi, or Langkawi Sky Cab, has been the island's tourist highlight since its opening in 2002. A 2-kilometer-long cable car takes you to lofty heights on Mount Machinchang. The view from Machinchang Mountain is unique. On a clear day, you can see several kilometers of untouched nature.

Oriental Village

The Oriental Village, and thus the valley station of the cable car, is located in the northeast of the island, not far from our Hotels, and is marked on every tourist map. The signage is good, and the complex is easy to reach by car. Parking is free. In the Oriental Village, a few houses were built in the local style around a lake. Here you'll find the usual tourist shops, from T-shirts and souvenirs to all sorts of more or less useful items. The small restaurants have normal prices, and you can definitely get something to eat or a coffee here.

Langkawi Cable Car – Panorama Langkawi

Tickets for Panorama Langkawi cost 35 MYR per adult (approx. 10 EUR) (more information on the official websiteThere weren't any long lines during our visit. However, before we were allowed to board the small gondolas, we had to watch a film in the so-called Sky Dome. This is included in the admission price. We expected a film about space or something similar in the small dome, but were bitterly disappointed by a poorly animated roller coaster ride on Mars (?).

Then we were finally able to enter the lift. There are always six people on the ride. At most, you might take a VIP or glass-bottom gondola. The ride covers the 1,700-meter stretch to the middle station and takes only a few minutes. Along the way, we had fantastic views of the landscape. On the right, you can spot a large waterfall during the rainy season. Ours was more of a trickle. The route climbs over very high pillars and has an extremely steep climb in the final few meters.

The middle station is at an altitude of 650 meters, where you can disembark and walk to a viewing point. We had a great view of the bay from our hotel. The Danna Langkawi with the adjacent harbor. In the distance, you can see Cenang and the airport.

We continued on by gondola to the mountain station, a good 50 meters higher. Major construction work is currently underway there, making one of the two 360-degree panoramic platforms inaccessible to us. But even from the other one, we had a breathtaking view of the landscape. To the north, we could even see as far as Thailand.

Sky Bridge – Panorama Langkawi

The Sky Bridge is an impressive suspension bridge spanning two mountains. Construction is currently underway here, too. They plan to build a kind of elevator on rails to eliminate the need for stairs. However, an alternative solution is a 450-meter-long hiking trail through the jungle. This costs 5 MYR and involves several flights of stairs, requiring a minimum level of fitness and sturdy footwear. The effort required at 700 meters above sea level and in temperatures of 30°C should not be underestimated.

The bridge is 125 meters long and only opened in 2004. Its shape is unusual: instead of spanning the valley in a straight line, it is curved. The vibrations in calm conditions are minimal. Individual glass elements in the floor allow you to look down approximately 100 meters.
