Big, gigantic, Dubai Mall

The Dubai Fountain

Our day started a little later than we thought, because when we first looked at the clock it was already 8:50 am. So quickly get out of bed and have a delicious and hearty breakfast. Today's destination was the Dubai Mall, which is the largest shopping center in the world with a sales area of 350,000 square meters.

Dubai Souks

The first thing we did today was the souks. There is a traditional spice market and a gold market in Dubai. We were both a bit disappointed. From the spices there was only a short market street where there wasn't that much to see. There was enough gold again, but we were asked at every corner whether we wanted to buy “sunnglasses” or “t-shirts”. After visiting the markets we walked to the Dubai Creek. Small water taxis drive here, which will take you to the other side for a few dirhams. But since we had parked our car in the parking garage at the souks, we had to turn back.

Emirates Towers

We then drove to the Emirates Towers. Here we really just wanted to quickly collect a puzzle cache that we had already solved at home. The small park south of the two towers with the triangular floor plan turned out to be extremely idyllic. Here we also met a group of peacocks. But they mainly hid from the hot midday heat between the bushes. We parked our car in an underground car park of the Dubai International Finance Center. Here, as in almost all car parks in the city, you can park for at least one hour for free.

Dubai Mall

After all that walking in the heat, we finally longed for an air-conditioned mall again. The new Dubai Mall was not far from our current position at the Emirates Towers. So we got in the car and drove off.

After what felt like an eternity, we also found a parking space in the huge multi-storey car park. The mall is just amazing and with a sales area of 350,000 square meters it is the largest shopping center in the world. In addition to the multitude of different shops, there is a 24 meter high waterfall, an artificial ice rink with Olympic and ice hockey dimensions and an aquarium with 10,000 cubic meters of lake water. To describe the mall as gigantic is, in our opinion, an enormous understatement. It's much more of an increase in gigantic.

Burj Khalifa and Dubai Fountain

Other highlights of Downtown Dubai are a water basin landscape with the world's largest fountain system and the Burj Khalifa, which is the tallest building in the world at a height of 828 meters.

We sat down at the artificial lake near the Dubai Mall and waited for the water games to start. Every 30 minutes, fountains up to 150 meters high are shot into the sky as cascades accompanied by music from 6600 lights and 50 color projectors. The shows all only last around two minutes, but it's worth it.

After dinner at one of the mall's myriad restaurants, we watched the water show again after dark. Now the light show just works a lot more. The Burj Khalifa glitters in the background. Brilliant!
