Join us on our grandiose road trip through the breathtaking "Great Lakes State"!
Before we left Traverse City, we bought a slice of Choclate Cherry Fudge at Doug Murdick's. We drove east on Highway M-72 until we met Interstate Highway I-75 at Grayling. We followed this in a southerly direction until we left Saginaw on the right. We left at exit 146A and followed the signs to our first destination: Frankenmuth.
Road Trip USA (Midwest): Frankenmuth – Michigan's Little Bavaria
Frankenmuth calls itself the little Bavaria of Michigan. And so it was. We parked our car at the River Place Shopping Center and first visited this replica of a Bavarian village. Bavarian folk music and Udo Jürgens' Greek wine boomed out of the loudspeakers the whole time. It was so bizarre, but we already knew what the Americans think of German culture. In the shops there were all kinds of German-American specialties as well as toys, clothing and furniture. To cross the small river and see the rest of the city founded by German immigrants, we took the stylish covered bridge. We collected a few more geocaches and got more impressions of the American understanding of Bavaria and Germany. Every German gets fits of laughter here, but somehow it's also a bit cute.
Birch Run Premium Outlets
We continued to Birch Run. Only 15 minutes drive to our hotel today – again a Hampton Inn. After checking in, we only had to go to the other side of I-75 to the Birch Run Premium Outlets and could shop for all we were worth. Armed with a shopping list as long as Santa's wish list and additional coupons, we set off. Tommy Hilfiger, Carters, GAP, Banana Republic. The wardrobe for next year was filled again – just for shopping at Tommy Hilfiger, the holiday was worth it again.
Halo Burger
Dinner was at Halo Burger. A fast food chain unknown to me, which is only represented in Michigan. We ordered a QP burger and a half-pound supreme. Very tasty and a very tasty sauce on the burger. Totally recommended and gets a spot on our list of the best fast food restaurants!
