Singapore Airlines Regional Business Class on the Airbus A350-900 to Bangkok

After a fantastic stay in the SilverKris Business Class Lounge in Terminal 3, we were looking forward to our flight in the Singapore Airlines Regional Business Class in the Airbus A350-900. Find out in the following trip report what amenities the cabin offers and what service you can expect on short routes within Asia.

How did we book our flight?

This flight was part of a connecting route from Kuala Lumpur via Singapore to Bangkok. To get from Singapore to the Thai capital Bangkok, there are various options in different price categories. Both low-cost airlines like Scoot and premium carriers like Singapore Airlines or THAI offer direct flights. However, since it was clear to us that we wanted to book a reward flight, we decided on what we thought was the best value for money and booked a business class flight to Bangkok with Singapore Airlines.

I found a good offer through Miles+Bouns, Aegean Airlines' frequent flyer program, where I also have my Star Alliance Gold status. In total, we paid 97,500 award miles and only 78 euros in taxes and fees for flights in Singapore Airlines Business Class (for two adults and one child).

What is the cabin and seat like in Singapore Airlines Regional Business Class on the Airbus A350-900?

Singapore Airlines uses the Airbus A350-900 on both long-haul and short- and medium-haul routes. However, aircraft with a different cabin configuration are generally used on the shorter intra-Asian routes. Our Airbus A350-900 to Bangkok had 40 seats in business class and 263 seats in economy class. This version does not have a Premium Economy option like the A350-900 in the standard configuration or in the Ultra-Long-Range (ULR) configuration. The 40 Business Class seats are arranged in a 1-2-1 configuration in a total of 10 rows, which are in turn divided into two cabin sections. There are seven rows in the first part and another three rows in the second part. There are two toilets in between. In the middle row, the seats in the odd rows are right next to each other, i.e. without much privacy. In the even rows, contact with the person sitting next to you is more difficult due to the greater distance and the storage space.

For the flight to Bangkok I chose seat 20A in the small rear cabin area of ​​business class. The seat, made in a subtle brown-grey, is aligned straight in the direction of flight and you don't have to tilt your legs to the left or right - although the space for your feet was limited. Shoes can also be optimally stored under the leg rest. The seat padding was very good. Additionally, the Singapore Airlines Regional Business Class seat on the Airbus A350-900 can be converted into a lie-flat bed. Although you could fold down the armrests on both sides for sleeping, I found the freedom of movement to be somewhat restricted.

On the side of the seat there is a sort of locker that houses a power outlet and two USB ports. The headphones were also stored here at the beginning. In addition, a small mirror can be folded out at this point. The storage area underneath is large enough to place an iPad or a book on it. The controls for the in-flight entertainment and the seating position adjustment are located under the side shelf.

On the other side of the seat there are three small lamps aimed at the different seating positions. The seats are equipped with a privacy screen at head height, which protects against the gaze of other passengers, but also makes it difficult to see out of the window.

The table for eating and working is stowed under the monitor and can be extended and unfolded from there. However, as long as the table was unfolded, I couldn't get up.

Using the booking code, we were able to view the menu for the flight on the Singapore Airlines website a few days before departure. The three dishes to choose from were: Seared Salmon with Lemon Caper Velouté, Gaeng Ooi Gai (Thai Lemongrass Curry Chicken with Steamed Rice and Seasonal Vegetables) and Braised Beef Breast in Chu Hou Sauce. Since none of the dishes on offer could convince me, I was happy that Singapore Airlines offers a special service in business class with the “Book the Cook” program. Here you can choose your favorite meal from a variety of Asian and international dishes. Since I had a huge appetite for Indian food, I opted for Makhan Walamurgh (Indian Butter Chicken). Despite the extensive online offering, a menu was still handed out at the start of the flight.

In addition to the main course of your choice, there was Yum Som Or Goong (Thai-style marinated shrimp with grapefruit salad) as a starter and a delicious coconut bavarois with tropical fruit compote as dessert. All the food was delivered together on a tray straight from the galley.

The selection of drinks in Singapore Airlines Regional Business Class was very extensive. The NV Piper-Heidsieck Essentiel Extra Brut champagne was offered on the flight from Singapore to Bangkok. The selection of red and white wines included internationally awarded wines, including from New Zealand, South Africa and Australia. But alcoholic cocktails such as the famous Singapore Sling or a Screwdriver, aperitifs (Campari) and non-alcoholic mocktails were also on the Singapore Airlines menu.

What is the in-flight entertainment like in Singapore Airlines Regional Business Class on the Airbus A350-900?

The Singapore Airlines entertainment program offered a good selection of films, some with German soundtracks, series, music and special offers for children. Of course there was also the obligatory air show to follow the flight route. You could also find out about the drinks on offer during the flight and various games were also available to choose from. The noise-cancelling headphones provided a pleasant sound. The in-flight entertainment was controlled either by remote control or touchscreen.

Most aircraft in the Singapore Airlines fleet are equipped with Wi-Fi. Passengers traveling in Suite, First Class or Business Class, as well as members of the PPS Club or KrisFlyer program, have access to free Wi-Fi on board certain aircraft. This is also the case on this regional business class flight from Singapore to Bangkok. However, we did not use the internet offer.
