Transavia Economy Class in the Boeing 737-800 to Berlin

Transavia Boeing 737-800

If you want to fly from Munich to Berlin within Germany, you have previously landed with Air Berlin or Lufthansa. Since May 30th is with the Dutch Transavia a third provider in the league. Unlike Lufthansa and Air Berlin, Transavia flies to Schönefeld Airport twice a day. So I dared to try and flew to Berlin in Transavia Economy Class on a Boeing 737-800.

Despite my frequent flyer status with Oneworld and Star Alliance and the associated advantages such as fast lane, lounge and priority boarding, I step out of my "comfort zone" and dare the low-cost experiment. The price of €77 return a week before departure is unbeatable and somehow this small green and white airline has made me curious since the stationing of four Boeing 737s in Munich.

The website is simple and clearly structured. My suitable flights are found quickly: Departure June 2nd MUC-SXF at 6:40 a.m. (OMG) and return on June 2nd at 9:40 p.m. I do without extras such as checked baggage and seat reservations. It's enough for me if I can choose my seat for free at check-in.

I can easily check in using the app. On the outbound flight, I select seat 23A. Transavia flies from Terminal 1, areas D and E. Without any frequent flyer status benefits, I queue up and wait 20 minutes until I'm through security.

When you arrive at the gate, you are immediately asked to show your luggage so that it gets an appropriate label. Our pilots arrive five minutes before boarding. The departure is still on time. For the flight to Berlin I reserved a seat by the window, unfortunately the 737-800 is a bit older and the windows are very dirty. We start via the northern railway in the direction of Berlin Schönefeld.

After the start I take a look at the menu. Interesting are the offers such as the Dutch break deal (biscuit and coffee) for €4.00 or the Traveller's dinner deal (sandwich and soft drink or coffee) for €7.00. I'm trying the sandwich deal and should have taken the cookie instead. The coffee is from Nescafé and is immediately poured with hot water. If you get bored, you can use the Transavia Entertainment app to download films and series before departure using your booking number and watch them during the flight.

50 minutes in the air flies by. The crew collects the rubbish and we start the descent. We are approaching Berlin Schönefeld Airport from the west. My first landing in Schönefeld is unexpectedly hard - I'm welcome to practice a bit more! :-) To my surprise, we dock at one gate, which differentiates Transavia from Easyjet, Ryanair and Germanwings, who all disembark on the apron, what a luxury!

Arrival at Berlin Schoenefeld Airport

The distances at the former central airport of the GDR are short and so I am outside in less than two minutes and on my way to the Schönefeld train station. In the evening we return to Munich with Transavia. This time the PH-HXC flies. This Boeing 737-800 saw the light of day just a few months ago and is equipped with the modern Sky Interior. The crew was friendly and nice. Unfortunately, Schönefeld as an airport is an absolute disaster - true to the motto: "You get what you pay for!".

Summary

Transavia does a lot of things right in Munich. If you put your frequent flyer and status habits aside, the product you get for the price is perfectly fine - nothing special, but nothing bad either. The idea with the entertainment app is good, but unfortunately you have to have enough memory on your device to access the content (download before the flight). A shortcoming of the flight with Transavia to Berlin is actually the airport Schönefeld.

Robert

Hi, I'm Robert and I've been infected by the flying virus since my first flight in 1993, in a Tupolev Tu-154. Chances of recovery are zero. Since I've been dealing with mileage programs even more intensively and am Topbonus Platinum and Star Alliance Gold, everything has gotten much worse. :-) Luckily for me, I have a very understanding family who are happy to share my passion with me and benefit from it. In the summer of 2015 we moved from Berlin to near Munich and now also have a great and above all functioning airport right on our doorstep. So there will be many more exciting trips and pictures, nice that you are there!
